If there is a reason why in the rest of Europe bicycle infrastructure, especially in urban areas, works and in Italy it is scarcely used, it is undoubtedly because of a question of approach to the subject: cycling has always been considered the child of a lesser God and, as such, attention is given to it only when strictly necessary, where there is space and without due care and attention.
Similar to other areas of urban road mobility, there are more interventions that rely on fideistic approaches dictated by the fashion of the moment (traffic circle fever is emblematic) than those that, instead, involve careful analysis and cause-and-effect relationships.
Simply put, what is missing in mobility design, and even more so in bicycle design, is in many cases a scientific approach to the subject that knows how certain actions are matched by necessary reactions. Because without data, correct decisions cannot be made.
It is to remedy this shortcoming that we joined forces with the French company Eco-Counter and published an ebook for free distribution entitled“For a Scientific Approach to Cycling.”
The ebook is free to download, after registration, from this link: click
A 5-week communication campaign on Bikeitalia.co.uk will give further strength to the project to increase its outreach.
In short, let’s not miss an opportunity to make our small contribution to making Italy a more bicycle-friendly country.
